Feral Spotlight:Lord Walrus

Tell me some of the dj’s you’ve performed with?
Lots of homies and a few decently sized names. we don’t get many notable djs around the way so its usually friends and family djing parties. i kinda need to get out of eastern North Carolina to dj bigger parties with bigger names, but so far the lack of that hasn’t really held the dude back.

Who would you like to perform with in the future?
I guess speaking on “who do i like” at the moment, I’m pretty into a lot of people. most of which are probably everyone Else’s favorites as well though nothing too crazy. russ chimes is pretty consistently good. im into bag raiders who are currently in the US touring, although i will not catch them. I’m really into a lot of van she remixes. id be into atrak as well but that goes back more to my turntablist days as well. round table knights are real fly.. the glamour would be nice. kind of off the wall and silly but it would be cool to play with totally Michael, which alot of people say is weird but that guy is great. id also like to dj with easy tiger more than i do now, cus he rulessssssssss.

Who were your greatest influences musically?

Hard question because varys greatly and alot do not directly connect to what i do now. in a broad sense as a quick summary… 90s east coast hip hop like Nine, Das Efx, Mobb Deep etc… house/electronic shit i got into during my high school years like Basement Jaxx, Cassius (lots of astralwerks stuff)… late 90s / early 2000s eary bands like portrait, frail, reversal of man, los crudos… my high school was filled with tons and tons of underground hiphop which iv fallen off a bit since then however. alot of the hipster electro / house artist that everyone else likes. it seems kinda like everyone got turned onto that in the last few years, its the new grunge. i bet 90s rave kids are pissed off because what they have been doing for so long and getting made fun of by everyone else for so long is now the hip thing, only they still don’t get any credit for it and are still made fun of… you know they have gotta be pissy every time they roll out in super baggy pants with 20 pockets and straps and everyone else is laughing at them. also it tends to be a surprise for people but i hate drum and bass and always have. it seems a large majority of people into the electro craze come from that, im not hating on it i just never got into it. while all of that seems random and spread out, it all culminates to who i am and how i get down both ethically, culturally and musically. DANG.

When did you finally realize you wanted to be a Dj/Producer?

I don’t know like 8-10 years ago i cant really remember. i got into turntablism first. my friend turned me onto xmen/executioners around the same time zoo yorks mixtape came out with the roc raida scene. thats why i first started djing.. obviously i blasted lots of hip hop at the time too. the natural progression of wanting to produce obviously came along much much later, and still isnt very good, but i will be the greatest producer in the universe one day.

Who affects you today musically?
My rapper stranger day. my partner Easy Tiger (myspace.com/itsdjeasytiger). both of them live almost exactly 4 hours from me so its hard but it keeps me a bit motivated to do stuff and not just watch tv all day. im really into the musicality of people like russ chimes and treasure fingers etc.. their songs just have so much going on. i have zero music playing abilities which limits me from being as awesome as i should be… so.. I’m under construction like a 90s yahoo  personal web page.

Marie France and Lucy Catherwood met in a High School class room. They both studied music from an early age. Lucy learning classical guitar and piano, and Marie, the piano and trombone. The two instantly became the strongest of allies through their shared passion of music and art.

By day they were studying classical pieces, yet by night they were listening to Nine Inch Nails and Muse, and producing demo’s on their second hand cassette 4 track.

The two went on to study Fine Art at University, but like Jekyll and Hyde, at night they continued with their musical ambitions. Soon, nights became days and the pair were dedicating increasingly more time to their music.

In 2005 they formed the new wave band Dead Disco who were quickly snapped up by Warner Music label 679. They disbanded in 2007 as they felt they were being pulled in different musical directions.

They then took a year out to develop their own clothing line Art Disco and also design artwork for other bands. This time away from the music scene rekindled their original desire to make music and they began to produce a sound that harked back to their early influences: Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, The Prodigy and N*E*R*D.

This time the 4 track had been upgraded to Pro Tools and the acoustic guitars exchanged for electric guitars and analogue synths, but still the same passion remained.

Tell me some of the dj’s you’ve performed with?
This project is really fresh for us at the moment (we’ve only been going since Christmas) so we’re currently working on taking the studio to the stage.

Who would you like to perform with in the future?

Nine Inch Nails would be an ultimate dream. We’d also love to play with Does it offend you, yeah? because even though they have a lot of electronic sounds in their music they still put on a good show and are very much a live band.

Who were your greatest influences musically?

We have a lot of varied influences, but we’d say our top 5 are: Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Missy Elliot and Daft Punk.

Feral Spotlight:Love-Markov

alm6

ALM: ‘Fractal mind, ambivalence, flexibility, reasonable extremity, sophisticated pedantry, every-day austerity, dark optimism, intensive pragmatism, functional nihilism (I kindly ask you not to mix it up with cynicism, individualism or other solipsism stuff) – here are the basic points of The 1980′s Demographic EXplosion Splinters (ODVZ-80) pop-doctrine, that by the way doesn’t give answers to all the questions. We are simply able to ask the right questions rightly, which is enough so far. To be continued in the following chapters of our lives…’

Tell me some of the dj’s you’ve performed with?
The most of deejays in my area just hate me… hahaha! As 4 Love-Markov he’s really not singer, not musician & not deejay. Well i am front boy, kind of a MC who likes dancing in a rather sexy lingerie & loud singing my explicit lyrics out of tunes! That’s why I should be the only one when I’m on stage…)

Who would you like to perform with in the future?

Despite I’m quite straight u know I’d obviously want to perform with Brazilian favela funkers Solange To Aberta! Penelope Edmund from London is wicked as well.

Who were your greatest influences musically?

Russia’s Prince Nuri, Nasekomuss, EVM Kadysheva & minimal boot one-man band.

When did you finally realize you wanted to be a Dj / Producer?
It seems I haven’t realized so far what exactly I do!))

Who affects you today musically?
Chicago-based 19-y.o. Austin! White… he’s marvelous hip hop beatmaker, rapper & even trance producer. I believe he’d certainly get dozens of Grammies someday!

What CD is in your car stereo right now?
LMAO TSE TUNG, dude!!! Well I have driver’s license of course yet have no car at all. So when I go out I’m listening 2 my own stuff mostly. And it’s just Sony Ericsson W580i which helps me outdoors.

How do you describe your music to people?
That’s the finest Russian-speaking pop zvuzika! The only one of its kind.

What is the most memorable live performance experience?
To be honest, every 2nd gig of mine was failed. Actually I don’t like club shows. But the other half of my performances was great for sure! Well I dislike the mikes – prefer 2 sing through combs in bedrooms, aqua parks & garrets. One of the craziest performances was ‘NOT TEARS BUT SONGS’ private gig in last August. During my Ace of Base cover that girlie audience in Moscow had just forced me to get naked in full!))

Is there a tour in your near future?
Yup! That would be The Great Love-Markov’s Odyssey 2009-2010. The route of that was developed last year & considers all the Western hemisphere countries except Caribbean’s. Yeah I’m going to have some gigz there, work 4 food & hump yr sweetest aborigine galz… awwkay!

Feral Spotlight:The Studio Band Headliner

tallblack
Originally from the north (NJ/NY area), moved to FL in 2001 and started making music in 2004. Started out as “DJRM”, solo Industrial music project, got into a girl band playing guitar called “The Monas” for a brief moment in time, started in another band called Slowing Inertia as the guitarist for that for about a year and started a side project with the singer doing electronic music named “Inbox”. Left Slowing Inertia when they turned into “Between Lives” (and continued to ”Start Change Stop” and now “Tides of Man”) and started “The Shades”, played several shows in FL with that band as singer, guitarist and bass for two years. Put that band on hold, all the while still making music as “DJRM”. DJed at a few small places as “DJRM” and got a bit of radio play last year off the album “Dissonance” following an interview on 88.5 WMNF for the show ZenTrip. I started recording other artists in a studio downtown Clearwater as “Pernicious Records” briefly and then I decided to contribute to the modern club scene with The Studio Band Headliner. I put all of my projects under the Pernicious Records label and have been working hard on getting recognition for The Studio Band Headliner. The sole, REAL band member of TSBH is, I will let you in on this secret, just me, James Makan; but Erik Eisenman, bassist, guitarist and vocalist from “The Shades” has agreed to help me play for the purpose of live shows during tours as well a few other friends I have played music with throughout the years. I have a good feedback ratio for this band of about 100:1 and I have gotten a few DJs to add my music to their playlists for their own shows. So far, as this band’s birthdate is December of 2008, the recorded discography is just the EP “Short Cut” – but later in 2009 the album ”F***, Marry, Murder” will be released and a tour will be thrown out for the promotion of that album’s release immediately after.

Tell me some of the dj’s/Bands  you’ve performed with?
I used to make industrial/dance music under a different name (DJRM) but I hadn’t done any public shows really besides an interview on the radio at 2am,maybe.With other bands I have been in, I have played live shows throughout my career in music. Other bands that we have played on the set with in the past are: Taffy, Tides of Man, Tabula Rasa, Start Change Stop, The Mants and a few others.

Who would you like to perform with in the future?
I’d love to perform with The Faint, MGMT, Interpol, Depeche Mode, Justice, She Wants Revenge, The Strokes… to name a very small few.

Feral Spotlight:Marc Bell

mb-pic

Worlds collide in many aspects of life. In fact some of the best things in life are a result of that very principle.
The combination of seemingly and completely different elements can be magical. That’s what Marc Bell’s musical background and experience brings to any project, song, or remix he lays hands on.

Hold tight and keep your ears clean and wax free, cause you’ll be dancing and the volume will make you get into it easily!!!
The sheer power of the beat and soulful anthems will instantly turn whatever you are into a dance floor. Marc Bell throws down the gauntlet to his peers and sounds the siren of the new evolution of pop-electronica.
Pop, soul, rock, dance, world……..whatever! They are now merely parts of Bell’s Frankenstein-esque groove machine.
The sound is all on its own, a pure Troublemakers stiletto that stabs you right in that exact spot where it should. Talent and balls combined makes great music! A colorful vision of an upcoming artist, an upcoming label, an upcoming movement, no borders, no limitations, and no rules. Just great sound!

Hot shit! Guaranteed satisfaction and pulverization.

Ed banger crew get into a Brawl at cinespace

So the other night was Busy P’s birthday bash at Cinespace in Los Angles, At the bash a fight broke out after Kavinsky was denied entry into VIP where the rest of the Ed Banger crew was. Some words were exchanged between Kavinsky and the bouncer leading to the bouncer pushing Kavinsky; When the rest of the Ed Banger crew saw what was happening they quickly jumped in.Apparently the bouncer was denying Kavinsky entry in to the VIP area because all the entry level average joes were really amped after hearing Thomas Bangalter (one of the Daft Punk members) play a live set earlier in the night and were bombarding the VIP area hoping to gain access. Is this the beginning of the end you decide….Below are some pics of the events that took place. You can see some notable people in the brawl like So Me,Kavinsky,Thomas Bangalter,Busy P to name a few.

Feral SpotLight:The American Dream Team

l_e84ed178c56149e88a76d0b4f2f8656e

Who came up with the name The American Dream Team?
America

Tell me some of the dj’s you’ve performed with?

Kill The Noise, Le Castle Vania, Computer Club, True Pseudo, Sidechains just to name a few

Who would you like to perform with in the future?
Would like to get on a bill with Deadmau5 or Craze one of these days

Who were your greatest influences musically?

Have tons like everything from Hendrix to Sabbath to Zinc to Treasure Fingers. Really loving Computer Club’s whole sound and engineering. That’s why I always bug him to give me feedback =P

When did you finally realize you wanted to be a Dj/Producer?

Well I been DJing since I was 14 but only been producing for about 3 or 4 years. The first party I went to when they use to have actual mixtape vendors in 97 or 98 is when I realized I wanted to start DJing.

Who affects you today musically?

Everyone

What CD is in your car stereo right now?
Funny you ask that because a good friend I grew up with just burned me a copy of the first mixtape I ever bought that was one of the main reasons why I started DJing. It’s a mix by DJ Venom called Return Of The Jungle Warrior.

How do you describe your music to people?

Really just bangin club music… every genre you can think of with a lot of electro and hip hop sounds

What is the most memorable live performance expierence?

NYE last year at the Famous Friends party. It was Dan & I with Kill The Noise, AC Slater, Udatchi & The FF crew. We were on the bill to do the ball drop.
Dan made this crazy Animation with a clock blowing up and a disco ball flying into the earth and that’s where I came up with the Drop It To The Floor Remix. It’s not an official remix I was just searching around for samples that had something to do with “Dropping” so I could go into it right after the ball drop. After I finished the track I was like shit this is pretty much a Machines Don’t Care Remix cus I used so much of the the keys and main sample from the original. But anyways the ball drop was nuts and people were bugging… best NYE so far.

Is there a tour in your near future?

In the works

Music for road trippin

I just got back from a trip to Charleston for the weekend, the trip was a bit longer than I expected, but the drive can be enjoyable if you prepare beforehand.  First off, get a comedy set from Mitch Hedburg, it’s a great way to start the trip, get in some laughs, don’t have to talk during it, so you won’t have to waste all of your good conversation up front.  Then get a collection of just relaxing cool jams, nothing too pounding, it can get a bit old after a few hours, just some cool tunes for the background, I’ve posted some below so you can get a good start (these are from my private stock, probably won’t be able to find them on the hype machine or the like).  Then, and this is very important, bring a few beers to drink during the second leg of the trip after you’ve had the laughs and have the jams playing, if you drive around the speed limit and don’t do anything stupid, you shouldn’t have to worry about getting an open container while you’re on the interstate.  Just dump them before you get off and throw on your best party music to get pumped for the drive in.

Feral Spotlight:BlackShere

blackshereguitar

BLACKSHERE (pronounced black-sheer) is the dazzling new singer/songwriter from New York City’s underground music scene! Defying the boundaries and labels of racial and genre specific stereotypes, her eclectic sound is a glam-sex hybrid of soulful R & B vocals, infectious pop hooks, electric rock guitars and panty-peeling dance beats. BLACKSHERE has collaborated with Grammy Award winning artist LL COOL J for his final Def Jam album Exit 13, co-writing 3 songs and performing on 6. She has also worked with Grammy nominated DJ/Producer MOBY, KAT DELUNA and WYCLEF JEAN among others. She has recently joined forces with downtown scene queen and star maker LADY STARLIGHT, who is credited for helping launch the career of international pop star LADY GAGA. BLACKSHERE is currently hard at work creating artistic concepts and writing new material for her forthcoming debut album. Find out more about BLACKSHERE by visiting her myspace page http://www.myspace.com/blacksherenyc

Tell me some of the DJ’s you’ve performed with?
I am currently performing with the Lower East Side rock DJ, Lady Starlight, who is my inspirational muse. I have also worked with J2am, a very talented dance-pop DJ from London and Digikid84, an amazing electro-funk DJ from Paris.

Who would you like to perform with in the future?
I would LOVE to collaborate with Lady GaGa, Kanye West, Slash (from Guns N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver), Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Ursula 1000, Dr. Luke, Quincy Jones…..I could be writing names for ever…….

Who were your greatest influences musically?
Chaka Khan, Prince and En Vogue are dynamic artists that inspired me as a kid and continue to inspire me today.

When did you finally realize you wanted to be a Dj/Producer?
I have been performing my entire life, since I was a child. My first public performance was in a pageant at the age of five. I grew up in a performing arts school and every day was like living in the movie “Fame”! I also sang lead in my church choir. I initially wanted to be in the background of the arts, and just do hair and makeup services for celebrities, but then melodies and song lyrics began haunting me……I knew I had to be the one to express my own lyrics.

Who affects you today musically?
I’m actually more disaffected towards most music these days so this is a tough question. As far as modern pop music is concerned I would say Britney Spears and Lady GaGa affect me the most as contemporary artists. Britney is daring and has tons of swagger in the studio…..she’s an entertainer. After 10 years and all the drama, she can still churn out killer pop tracks. Lady GaGa is exciting and fresh….she can sing, dance, write and has a very strong creative artistic direction. I also like Kanye West and Santogold….He has swagger too, and Santogold proves that black girls can be successful singing something other that hip-hop.
What CD is in your car stereo right now?
Lately I have been more visually inspired. Watching YouTube videos of En Vogue, Dolly Parton, Cher…….

How do you describe your music to people?

My music is sensual, fun, soulful…….a mix of pop, rock, dance, funk…..it’s “DARK POP”!

What is the most memorable live performance expierence?
I performed for the Nobel Peace Prize winning freedom activist Bishop Desmond Tutu. I gave him a hug. He has amazing energy, warm and inviting.

Is there a tour in your near future?
I want to say yes! I will keep working hard until this happens. It’s all up to the fans. There is no tour without fans.
