Q: Can you start by describing your sound?

Rob: I think we try and make pretty melodic, percussive music dealing with quite dark subject matter, but with jaunty melodies. It’s hard to do!

Q: So disguising the dark subject matter?

Rob: Yeah, you could say that!

Q: The phrase ‘Kitchen Sink Indie’ has been used to describe you, care to comment?

Rob: It might just be lazy journalism, as we do mention a kitchen and a sink separately in a couple of songs, so they could have just put the two together, or it might be an interesting description.

Q: So it’s not a reference to classic ‘kitchen sink dramas’?

Rob: I think a lot of the lyrics do deal with an objects perspective on a relationship or social situation, so there might be something in it.

Q: There are a diverse set of influences listed on your website, people like Roald Dahl and Ella Fitzgerald, did you write that or is someone else responsible for it?

Rob: Yeah I think you could site those as some of our influences, like the imagination of Roald Dahl and with classical music as well, like Elgar and Debussy. There’s a lot to take from it.

I watched a lot of arnold schwarzenegger movies this weekend. I love it when he says some corny line pertaining to how he’s going to kill someone right before or after he does it. For example in Total Recall when he kills a guy with a drill, he says “you’re screwed” or when he drops a guy off a cliff he says “I let him go”, etc.

This one came up one my ipod on shuffle, most people won’t admit to listening anything but classic house and drum and bass back in the early 2000’s, but I did listen to a small bit of trance, and this was one of my favorites, none of those stupid drawn out build ups.

Just a few tracks I’ve been digging lately

I’m a big fan of La Roux and an even bigger fan of Just a band, so I was really happy to find this remix, complete with unfiltered bassline and pitch-lfo stabs.
La Roux – Bulletproof (Just A Band Remix)

Coinecedentally I first heard of Djedjotronic from his remix of Burn It Out by previously mentioned Just A Band, this is the Boys Noize remix, the sound is what you would expect from both, but the structure is really different, it’s pretty much just “build ups” of loops that either rise in pitch, filter cutoff frequency or volume. I’m generally not a big fan of the whole “stand around waving your hands and acting like you’re enjoying it when you’re really just pissed you have to wait to dance” kind of breakdowns, but these are a bit different, you could dance through the whole song.

Seems like everyone liked the Ocelot I posted last, and since you asked for more I figured I’d post my favorite, the Tom Nelville remix. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the Treasure Fingers mix too, just with the drug/sex/rockandroll lyrics a dirty electro banger seems more fitting.

Today is a very sad day, we have lost the world’s greatest musician. I, like many, own the original Thriller album and without a doubt consider it the greatest album ever made. Any single song off of that album would have made an artist go down in history, but contributing an entire lifetime of innovative dance and pop music makes an artist into a legend. He is the “Beatles” of dance music, and considering we may never see another artist who can surpass him makes this an especially sad time. Although I want to post the entire Thriller album in case people may not have listened to it completely, and so everyone else could enjoy it once more, out of respect for this man’s legacy I will only post some remixes and encourage you, IF YOU DO NOT OWN THE THRILLER ALBUM, BUY IT RIGHT NOW!
